One of the important technical texts on the art of painting in Hinduism is "Vishnu dharmottara Purana"
You can say - "Vishnu dharmottara Purana" is the appendix text of Vishnu Purana. The 3rd part or kaand of this text is exclusively devoted to the discussion about arts & paintings.
Almost all the important Puranas deal with the arts in various chapters, the "Vishnu dharmottara Purana" stands apart because of its extensive, in-depth and detailed coverage of the arts in general, and especially the art of paintings.
All the other Puranas, that serves as the repository of information about the paintings, arts, are the Agni Purana, Matsya Purana, Vayu Purana and Shiva Purana. These four also have interesting sources & refer material for the study of the arts of painting, sculpture, architecture & icono-graphy.
The 3rd Kaand of "Vishnu dharmottara Purana" consists of 5 sections, each one of these 5 deals with a particular branch of art in detail. It has surprisingly lot of minute details too!
The 1st section-
This contains deals with preliminaries and sort of introduction to the further sections. It emphasizes on the etymology & diction of the ancient literary arts, also on the concept of the dependence of virtually all forms of art on the art of painting.
The 2nd section:
This has the Natyasutra, speaks of the cultural, eternal dramatic arts, & discusses all facets of dance, drama, nataraja and music.
The 3rd section:
This contains the Chitrasutra, gives a detailed account of the art of painting.
The 4th section:
This secion consited of Pratima Lakshana, covers matters on iconography of images represented in art.
The 5th section:
It represents Prasada Lakshana; it has detailed elaboration on account of architecture, both religious and secular.
